CHOWFAM Skate Club - CHOW TUESDAYS

I promise you, there's more behind our Brand than you think there is! So please have a read about our mission to inspire more Adelaide girls to learn to skate!!

I absolutely love seeing that every year more and more Adelaide girls are interested in giving skateboarding a go. But what I think is the most COOLEST is - hearing how many of those girls asked for skateboards this year!
So when I ask our newbies when they first attend one of our sessions - "what made you want to get into skateboarding?", they all pretty much say "I dunno, I just want to do it because I think it will be fun!"

And I think that's pretty RAD that they're super keen to learn. Especially those who's friends aren't into it, and/or their parents don't know a thing about skateboarding.

This is why I feel it's time for Chicks On Wheels to form our very own Skateboarding Club...for girls!!

We're all about empowering girls through the love of skateboarding, and to encourage them to keep skateboarding as they grow older.
Just ask yourself...how many women do you know that still play sport in their 20s, 30's and into their 40's? Well I definitely think skateboarding is a FUN a sport, and one that you can do at any age. I took up skateboarding at age 39, and it has been the BEST things I've ever done!

NOTE: A recent study by the Australian Sports Commission shows that 57% of girls aged 13-17 are disengaged in sport, compared to 37% of Australian boys.

I can't help but wonder, is that because they reach a point where they get bored and are looking to learn something new?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to hate on traditional sports - my son LOVES to play Cricket. The benefits of learning how to lose gracefully, the comradery that comes from being a part of a team, and building resilience in a fun way, are all valuable things to learn when you're young. I'm just saying, that the numbers don't lie. At some point - girls start losing interest in sports.
And we're here to push the fact that skateboarding will also teach kids those things. Such as how to push past their fear, and to achieve new skills through perseverance and long term commitment.
And incase you've been living under a rock the last couple of years....skateboarding is COOL!!
And has definitely become more popular with girls here in Adelaide after it was deemed an Olympic Sport. I like to use myself as proof for what we stand for - I wasn't into traditional sports as a kid. I have always wanted to be able to skate though, but for some reason as a teenager - I didn't give it a fair go. I can't tell you why, but I CAN tell you that I'm for sure making up for lost time now!!

I truly believe that if more Adelaide girls (and parents) gave skateboarding a go, they would see just how FUN it is! And that it's not as hard or as scary as they think it is. It just takes lots of practice. The BEST thing about skateboarding is that it's a super fun way to get active too, and there's always going to be something new to learn.

As a 42yr old Mum, I absolutely LOVE to skate! I love the freedom it brings, and I get super hyped seeing other girls skating. I also don't care that I can't do any tricks yet (unless you call drop ins a trick haha), I just love that it gets my heart pumping, and I always leave the skatepark with those happy endorphins rushing!

And at our CHOWFAM Skate Club, we want to share those happy, healthy endorphins with as many girls as we can!
